UK's College of Nursing BSN Program Covers Entire Lifespan: Starting Small

  Infant A baby in fuzzy yellow pajamas is staring with large unblinking eyes at the group of nursing students in front of her in a large lecture hall. She sticks a thumb in her mouth as Assistant Professor Carrie Gordy, MSN, APRN, asks for a student volunteer to come down to the front of the classroom. With a big smile, a sophomore-level nursing student approaches the infant and begins assessing her development. This is Nursing 201: Assessment and Health Promotion—one of the first building blocks of the College’s undergraduate curriculum.

College of Nursing Students Competed in Second Annual Global Health Case Competition

  Two undergraduate students and three DNP students at the UK College of Nursing recently competed in the second annual Global Health Case Competition (GHCC) hosted by the UK Global Health Initiative at the College of Pharmacy on Sat., Feb. 27. A total of twelve interdisciplinary student teams representing 15 different colleges developed strategies to address different ways to combat childhood obesity in Mexico.   College of Nursing students recently presented at the Southern Nursing Research Society’s (SNRS) 30th annual conference, “A Solid Legacy, a Bright Tomorrow: Bridging the Past and Future of Nursing Research,” in Williamsburg, Va., February 24-27.  Among the presenters were the following PhD students and one undergraduate student:

How to make breastfeeding easier for women working outside the home The following appeared in the Lexington Herald-Leader on Feb. 28. The health advantages of exclusive breastfeeding have been documented and reported for mothers and children. According to a 2014 report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nationally 79 percent of infants have been breastfed and 49 percent were breastfeeding at 6 months. 

College of Nursing PhD Students Publish Health Policy Article on Kentucky Bill HB 98

UK College of Nursing PhD students Amanda Culp-Roche, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, and Adebola Adegboyega, BSN, RN, recently had their article titled “Analysis of Kentucky’s Law Protecting the Rights of Schoolchildren with Type I Diabetes Mellitus: Application of Kingdon’s Policy Stream Model” published by SAGE Journals. 

College of Nursing Senior Dances For the Kids as DanceBlue Family Relations Chair

  College of Nursing senior Drew Walls will dance his way through his last semester as family relations chair for DanceBlue, a year-long, student-run fundraiser culminating in a 24-hour dance marathon, which has raised more than $8 million for the DanceBlue Kentucky Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic since 2006.

DNP Student Honors Son Through Suicidology Research and #DoItForChase

  By Sally Evans On October 16, 2013, College of Nursing DNP student Nicki Sullivan lost her 12-year-old son, Chase Whatley, to suicide. Wanting to honor Chase’s life, Sullivan, 39, received her BSN in August of 2014 and entered the DNP program that fall. “I thought this was the best way to do something productive,” Sullivan said. “I needed to figure out a way to channel the wealth of knowledge and resources I had into something I could use to help people.”

College of Nursing Professor Featured in RCTF Annual Report for Tobacco Control Research

Out of nearly 6,000 health care organizations in the United States, less than 7 percent have achieved Magnet designation.
