College Researcher Featured in WLKY Video on Push to Raise Kentucky's Cigarette Tax

The Coalition for Smoke Free Tomorrow is holding a news conference Tuesday in Frankfort. They said nearly 21 percent of Kentucky women smoke during pregnancy, which is more than two-and-a-half times the national rate. The group argues raising cigarette taxes is a proven way to reduce smoking. The Senate Health and Welfare Committee voted last week to recommend the tax increase. But right now there's no bill for the committee. Kentucky's current cigarette tax is $0.60 a pack, which is one of the lowest in the nation.

Select Medical today announced the first two nursing school graduates resulting from its educational scholarship partnership program with the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Nursing. Formed in 2015, the program enables eligible Select Medical registered nurses (RNs) to apply for and receive scholarships to pursue advanced nursing degrees from one of the nation’s top ranked universities for the nursing discipline.

As the College of Nursing’s undergraduate student body grows, so does the challenge to succeed. Between balancing a strenuous course load, working clinicals, studying for exams and maintaining a social life, students often face several stressors during their undergraduate careers. Since 2011, the University of Kentucky College of Nursing has seen a 36 percent overall increase in student enrollment, with 300 students enrolled during the 2016-2017 academic year, up from 220 during the 2011-2012 academic year.

College of Nursing Students, Veterans Nursing Council Collect More Than 75,000 Caps for Lady Veterans Connect

The University of Kentucky College of Nursing Veterans Nursing Council and students in Dr. Lexie Dampier's NUR 201 class collected more than 75,000 bottle caps for Lady Veterans Connect, a non-profit organization in Lexington, Kentucky, which aims to end homelessness for lady veterans. The caps will be recycled into chairs for the Lady Veterans' homes.
